Family Engagement Policy

Statement of Purpose

Black Elementary is dedicated to providing a quality education for every student in the district. The school will develop and maintain partnerships with parent/caregivers patrons and community members. The school will involve parents/caregivers in all aspects of the various local, state, and federal programs offered in Mesquite ISD. By maintaining open lines of communication, the learning opportunities and environment for every child will be enhanced.

Parent Involvement In Policy Development

The Black Elementary Site-Based Decision Making Committee is comprised of a parent, members of the community, teachers and the school principal.  This committee will discuss the design and implementation of the Black Elementary Involvement Policy.

Annual Meeting For Title I Parents

Black Elementary uses Title I funds to provide school-wide services for all students. Black Elementary will hold at least one meeting annually to review Title I guidelines and services offered through the school. Copies of the school’s current Parent Involvement Policy is on the website and the Black Elementary Parent-Student Compact will be distributed at the beginning of the year.

Parent-Student Compacts

In accordance with Title I regulations, Mesquite ISD has developed and will annually update a parent-student compact.  The compact is designed so that both the student and his/her parents can sign it. Students and parents are encouraged to discuss the contents of the compact, sign that they are in agreement with the compact, and return it to school.  This compact will provide an outline to enable the school and parents/caregivers to share responsibility for student performance and success.

Programs and the School Community

Black Elementary will support many varied ways of parental involvement as it strives to develop and maintain an optimum learning environment for all students:

  • Spanish translators will be provided for parents when needed.
  • Information will be provided in Spanish when needed.
  • Parents may contribute through volunteer programs.
  • Parents may contribute by creating a supportive home environment.
  • Parents are invited to participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Parents are invited to help plan and conduct parties and attend field trips.
  • Parents may participate by attending school meetings.

Staff and Parent Communication

Parents/caregivers will be informed of school activities through various avenues of communication throughout the school year.   Family Access system,  newsletters, teacher notes, the school marquee, conferences, phone calls and written notices will be used to establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents/caregivers.  Weekly and/or daily folders are sent home with every student.  Progress reports will be sent home during the 5th  week of each  grading period and report cards  are sent home at the end of each nine week  grading  period.

Supply Night will be held at the beginning of the school year to help facilitate parent/teacher introductions, as well as assist the student with beginning the year on a positive note.

Black Elementary staff members will be trained in positive communication activities as well as effective ways to work with parents, students, and members of the community.  Black Elementary will use the PBIS program to promote positive behavior and build relationships with the students.    Black Elementary staff will maintain a record of parent contacts throughout the school year.

                                                                                            Funding

MISD is required to set aside at least 1% of its Title Funds for the purpose of family engagement.  Each  campus  administrator  will  assign a Family Engagement Campus Liaison at their campus.   This person will be responsible for documentation of all family activities that occur at their campus and help educate faculty and staff on the importance of parent and family involvement.  They will work with district Tile I Family Engagement Liaisons to ensure proper planning and spending of the Title I funds.

Conclusion

The Black Elementary SBDM Committee will review and evaluate all aspects of the parent involvement program. Documented parent contact records will be used to determine the number and kind of interaction between school and parents.  The SBDM Committee will revise the school Parent Involvement Policy based on the results of this annual review.
